Beta-Ρhenyl-Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, better known as Phenibut or less commonly Fenibut or Ρhenybut, is a central nervous system depressant with anxiolytic, stimulant effects and is a derivative of the naturally occurring inhibitory neurotransmitter Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA).
The addition of a Ρhenyl ring allows Phenibut to cross the blood brain barrier. It is suggested that the GABA system is found in the hippocampus, an area of the brain which has been implicated in memory formation. GABA has also been noted to play a role in the sleep cycle as it one of the most abundant neurotransmitters, which may promote a relaxing effect.
